a few of us today had a very interesting discussion which i wanted to pen down. off late we have started this practice at work, of just sitting and reflecting on a question or a statement while we simultaneously empty our lunch boxes
the question today was "what do you think has the power to both create and destroy human beings?". the answers that came up were
Thoughts : how a man thinks he bocomes. so if he wants to be great he becomes great and if he thinks he is useless, he becomes useless. that is the power of our thoughts
How man utilises freedom: if a man knows how best to use the freedom he has been given, by the society and as a man itself, then he can go above many barriers and succeed
Words: well do i need to explain that? anyway, one of them said that it is the words we say that can create and destroy both ourselves and who it is told to.
I said it was Love. i strongly believe that love plays a significant role in shaping our thoughts. while saying this i remembered a story which goes thus.
there was a murderer who was about to be hanged. he was standing with his hand tied to his back, just behind the rope which would choke him to death in another few minutes. just before the guard put a black cloth over his face, he asked the young man his dying wish. the young man replied "i want to talk to my mother". his mother was called and she went to him. she was full of tears and unable to bear the fact that her son was going to be executed. her son asked to talk into her ears. when the mother leaned forward, he bit off one of her ears.
the mother stepped back screaming. she was shocked. she shouted at him lamenting why anyone would want to do this to his own mother. then the son replied. he said "i am standing here because of you. if you had told me that i shouldnt be doing what i was doing, then i wouldnt be here. in the name of love you kept quiet and accepted everything i did.Now i haev to pay the price for it."
this story was purely fictitious (i think..) which was told to me by my own mother i guess, i dont remember:)but maybe because of this only i believe that love can create as well as destroy, i dont know...

i agree with you.. Love.. thats what came to my mind too.. always does.
atmaiva hytatmanor bandhuh,
atmaiva ripuratmanah.
i quite strongly believe in it.
while i agree that love does influence in shaping our thoughts, i don't think love can ever be destructive. if it really is love in a way that it ougth to be. what we construe as love is but a wanting. when we garb excessive wanting, lust, unending demands and the likes as love - thats when it gets to destroy people - both us, and the object of our 'so called' love. and i don't believe that is love in the first place.
Dharmabum:
do your mean to say that the motehr in the story does not love his son?
UNPRETENTIOUS,
is that what i meant? i doubt. to conclude so from such a tiny account would be grossly judegemental, and possibly also presumptous on my account i think.
having said that i must add that i don't think it is necessary for a parent to love a child or the other way around, just because of the relationship. i don't believe blood is thicker.
i feel love can not destroy, it always creates and uplifts...if it really is love. in most cases that i see (and i talk purely from my experience) what is called love is merely an exchange mechanism, an agreement of convenience to satosfy the needs of the mind and the body.
